Dr Amit Kumar Honoured for Pioneering Work in Interventional Cardiology
The Kanpur-based cardiologist, who introduced primary angioplasty treatment for heart attacks to the city, received the recognition from cricketer Ishant Sharma at the ET Health Conclave 2026.
Dr Amit Kumar, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at K-Care Hospital & The Heart Centre in Kanpur, was recognised for pioneering work in the field of interventional cardiology at the ET Health Conclave 2026, held in the city on 26 July 2026. The recognition, part of a segment presented by Dalcore, was handed to Dr Kumar on stage by former India cricketer Ishant Sharma.
Over the course of his practice, Dr Kumar has independently performed more than 5,000 interventional cardiac procedures. He is credited as the first cardiologist to introduce primary angioplasty for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction — a heart attack — in Kanpur, a time-critical procedure in which restoring blood flow to the blocked artery within the shortest possible window directly determines patient outcomes.
A body of complex interventional work
Beyond routine angioplasty, Dr Kumar's practice has centred on some of the more technically demanding categories of coronary intervention, including:
- Bifurcation lesion angioplasty — treating blockages that occur at the branching point of two coronary arteries.
- CTO (chronic total occlusion) recanalisation — reopening arteries that have been completely blocked, often for an extended period.
- Left main coronary artery intervention — procedures on the artery supplying the largest share of blood to the heart muscle.
- Heavily calcified lesion treatment — angioplasty in arteries hardened by significant calcium build-up.
A dedicated cardiac centre in the heart of Kanpur
Dr Kumar is also the founder of K-Care Hospital & The Heart Centre, which he established as Kanpur's first state-of-the-art dedicated cardiac facility located centrally within the city. The hospital is equipped with a flat panel Cath Lab and a 96-slice CT scanner, positioning it among the more advanced cardiac diagnostic and interventional setups in the region.
About the recognition
The ET Health Conclave 2026 brought together healthcare leaders for a programme presented by Dalcore, under the banner "Design is Alive." Dr Kumar's award recognised his sustained contribution to advancing interventional cardiology practice in Kanpur, both through individual procedural volume and through building dedicated cardiac care infrastructure in the city.
