Chairman, Interventional Cardiology — India's foremost authority in structural heart disease interventions
About
Dr. Rajneesh Kapoor leads the Interventional Cardiology department at Medanta – The Medicity as its Chairman, bringing to his patients decades of accumulated expertise in the most technically demanding discipline within cardiology: structural heart disease.
"Structural heart disease no longer demands that patients face open-heart surgery. Today, the most complex valve conditions can be addressed through a catheter — with precision, safety, and remarkable recovery."
— Dr. Rajneesh Kapoor, Medanta GurugramHis practice centres on transcatheter valve therapies — procedures that treat diseased heart valves through small incisions or natural pathways, eliminating the risks and recovery time of conventional cardiac surgery. He has built one of India's most active structural heart programmes at Medanta, treating patients who have been turned away elsewhere, or for whom surgery carries unacceptable risk.
Specialisations
Dr. Kapoor offers the full contemporary spectrum of catheter-based structural heart interventions — procedures that were once impossible without surgery, now performed with remarkable precision through small access points.
TAVR / TAVI
Replacement of a diseased aortic valve via catheter, through the groin or chest, without open-heart surgery. Suitable for high- and intermediate-risk surgical patients, and increasingly in lower-risk cases. TAVR and TAVI refer to the same procedure — different terminology for the same breakthrough.
TMVR
Non-surgical replacement of the mitral valve using catheter-delivered prostheses. Addresses severe mitral regurgitation or stenosis in patients unable to undergo conventional surgery. An evolving frontier of structural cardiology where Dr. Kapoor holds considerable expertise.
MitraClip · Mitral Valve Clipping
A clip device delivered via catheter grasps and approximates the mitral valve leaflets, reducing mitral regurgitation without surgery. Transformative for patients with symptomatic moderate-to-severe mitral regurgitation and elevated surgical risk.
Structural Heart Disease
ASD and PFO closure, left atrial appendage occlusion, balloon valvuloplasty, transcatheter tricuspid valve interventions, and other catheter-based procedures for congenital and acquired structural heart defects — all within a single expert programme at Medanta.
Why Dr. Kapoor
Structural heart interventions sit at the highest tier of technical complexity in cardiology. The outcomes depend not just on equipment, but on the volume of experience, the depth of judgement, and the breadth of options a physician can bring to a case. Dr. Kapoor's programme at Medanta reflects all three.
One of India's Highest-Volume Structural Heart Programmes
Volume is the single strongest predictor of outcomes in complex structural interventions. Dr. Kapoor's programme at Medanta is among the most active in South Asia, with broad experience across TAVR, TMVR, MitraClip, and the full range of structural procedures.
Complex and Refused Cases Welcome
Many patients referred to Dr. Kapoor have been told they are too high-risk for surgery elsewhere. His expertise in transcatheter alternatives often opens treatment options where none appeared to exist — bringing hope back to patients and families who had none.
Heart Team Approach at a Tertiary Centre
Medanta's structural heart programme operates as a collaborative heart team — cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, imaging specialists, and anaesthesiologists together. Every case is reviewed. No single perspective decides alone. This model consistently produces the safest outcomes.
Catheter-First Philosophy
Where transcatheter therapy can achieve an equivalent or superior outcome to surgery, it is preferred. Shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, lower bleeding risk, and no general anaesthesia requirement make catheter-based valve therapy the future of structural heart care — and already the standard at Medanta.
Watch & Learn
In these videos, Dr. Rajneesh Kapoor discusses TAVR, TAVI, mitral valve disease, and minimally invasive treatments — in plain language for patients and families navigating a structural heart diagnosis.
Patient Stories
Real patients, real outcomes. These are accounts from individuals who came to Dr. Kapoor facing serious valve disease — many of whom had been told that surgery was their only option, or that treatment was too risky.
Common Questions
TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) is a minimally invasive procedure to replace a diseased aortic valve without open-heart surgery. A new valve is compressed onto a catheter, delivered to the heart through the femoral artery, and deployed inside the existing valve. It is now approved for patients at all surgical risk levels. If you have been diagnosed with aortic stenosis or aortic valve disease, Dr. Kapoor can assess whether TAVR is appropriate for you.
In many cases, yes. Mitral regurgitation can be treated with MitraClip — a catheter-delivered clip that approximates the mitral valve leaflets — and more advanced cases may be addressed with TMVR (Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement). Dr. Kapoor will evaluate your anatomy, symptoms, and risk profile to determine the best approach, which may well be catheter-based rather than surgical.
Most patients undergoing TAVR at Medanta are discharged within 2 to 4 days. Because there is no open-chest incision, recovery is substantially faster than surgical valve replacement. Many patients resume normal activity within a week or two, with full recovery typically complete within 4 to 6 weeks — compared to 8–12 weeks for open surgery.
This is precisely the patient population that transcatheter structural heart therapy was developed for. TAVR and other catheter-based procedures were originally designed for patients deemed inoperable or very high-risk for surgery. Dr. Kapoor regularly treats patients who have been declined for surgery by other centres. Please reach out — many such patients find effective treatment pathways through his programme.
You may reach Dr. Kapoor's team via WhatsApp at +91 9971991740, or request an appointment through the Medanta Hospital system. You are encouraged to share prior cardiac reports, echocardiograms, and CT scans when booking, so that the team can prepare a preliminary assessment before your visit. International patients are also welcome and Medanta has a dedicated international services team.
