The Kanpur Cardiology Summit 2026 was held on 22 and 23 August 2026 at Kingston Resort, Kanpur, bringing together more than 300 cardiologists and heart specialists from across India and abroad. Organised by the Cardiometabolic Society (cardiometabolicsociety.com), the two-day medical conference focused on advances in cardiology diagnosis, treatment techniques, and public awareness around heart disease.

The event was led by an organising committee headed by Prof. (Dr.) Mohd Ahmad (Former Professor, LPS Institute of Cardiology, Kanpur) and Dr. Harsh Agarwal (Senior Director – Cardiology, Regency Healthcare, Kanpur) as Organising Chairmen, with Dr. Amit Kumar, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, K-Care Hospital & The Heart Centre, Kanpur, serving as one of three Organising Secretaries alongside Dr. Abhishek Shukla (Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Lucknow) and Dr. Vikas Agarwal (Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Varanasi). The Chief Guest for the summit was Dr. Ashok Seth, Chairman of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi. The summit received wide coverage across more than 20 leading newspapers in the region — reflecting the scale and public health relevance of the event.

At the pre-event press conference held at IMA Bhavan, Kanpur, organisers announced that specialists from India and abroad — including experts joining online from countries such as the USA and Australia — would participate in the summit. Speaking at the press briefing, Dr. Amit Kumar said the summit's objective was to create an effective platform for cardiologists to share scientific knowledge, clinical experience, and the latest research in the field. Sessions across the two days covered preventive cardiology, clinical cardiology, cardiac imaging, heart failure, electrophysiology, and structural and interventional cardiology.

Dr. Ashok Seth of Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi, attended as Chief Guest, with senior faculty including Dr. Nakul Sinha (Lucknow) and Dr. PK Goyal (Interventional Cardiologist, Medanta Lucknow) among the key speakers.

Press conference at IMA Bhavan, Kanpur — 20 August 2026

Ahead of the summit, a press conference was held on 20 August 2026 at IMA Bhavan, Kanpur, where the event and its key research findings were formally announced to the media. The briefing was addressed by Prof. (Dr.) Mohd Ahmad (Organising Chairman), Dr. Amit Kumar (Organising Secretary), along with Dr. Anurag Mehrotra (President, IMA Kanpur), Dr. Shalini Mohan (Honorary Secretary, IMA Kanpur), and Dr. Abhinit Gupta (Organising Co-Secretary). Prof. Mohd Ahmad noted that cardiology is a rapidly evolving field, and that conferences of this kind give cardiologists practising in and around Kanpur a direct channel to engage with experts on complex cases and emerging treatment approaches — a benefit that ultimately reaches patients through improved care. Organisers also described the summit as a step toward giving Kanpur's cardiac care expertise recognition on a national and global platform, not just a local one.

Key Medical Insights Shared at the Summit

Sleep Deprivation and Heart Attack Risk — The K-Care Hospital Study

The most widely reported finding from the summit was a study conducted by Dr. Amit Kumar and his team at K-Care Hospital & The Heart Centre, Kanpur, who served as the study's Principal Investigator. The study surveyed heart attack patients about their sleep habits and cardiac risk factors in the months before their attack.

55%Slept <7 hrs before attack
36%Slept 4–6 hrs nightly
9%Slept <4 hrs nightly
45%Got recommended 7–9 hrs
100%Had high blood pressure
82%Family history of heart disease
64%Had diabetes
55%Reported habitual snoring

Also found: 45% of patients reported sleeping even less than their own usual pattern in the week immediately before the attack, often citing work pressure, stress, or illness. 36% rated their sleep quality as "quite bad" or "very bad." None of the patients reporting habitual snoring had received a formal sleep apnea diagnosis.

"Poor sleep is a neglected but modifiable risk factor for heart disease — it deserves the same attention as diet, exercise, and blood pressure control." — Dr. Amit Kumar

Dr. Amit Kumar explained that inadequate sleep can raise blood pressure and inflammation and trigger stress hormones that elevate cardiac risk. He noted the study group is still relatively small and that the research is ongoing, with plans to include more patients going forward.

Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Experts highlighted that snoring is often mistaken for deep sleep but can actually be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea — a condition linked to increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Specialists noted that sleep apnea cases are increasingly being seen in the 30–50 age group, largely linked to rising obesity, poor lifestyle habits, and stress.

Rising Heart Attack Risk in Younger and Obese Patients

Discussions at the summit pointed to a growing trend of heart attacks in younger patients, with obesity identified as a major contributing factor. Dr. Rajendra Prasad noted that untreated obesity can significantly raise heart attack risk in patients aged 60–65, while advances such as targeted cancer drugs have shown risk reduction in select patient groups. Specialists also discussed how a neck collar size above 17 inches and a BMI above 25 are indicators of higher sleep apnea and cardiac risk.

Diabetes and Cardiac-Kidney Risk

Delhi and Lucknow-based specialists, including Dr. Shivendra Verma and Dr. Kunal Sahay, discussed how nearly every fifth diabetes patient today is under the age of 40, and how long-term diabetes medication use can affect both heart and kidney health. The summit featured discussion on Semaglutide-based treatment, which has shown effectiveness in reducing cardiac risk in diabetic and obese patients when prescribed under medical supervision.

Advances in Blockage Treatment — 3D Technology

Dr. PK Goyal discussed how 3D imaging technology is improving the precision of coronary blockage diagnosis and treatment, helping doctors better assess blockage size and location — making treatment planning more accurate, including for patients who may otherwise require open heart surgery.

Tobacco and Heart Risk

Senior faculty also addressed public misconceptions around tobacco use, noting that bidi smoking poses a greater risk to lungs and heart than cigarettes, based on comparative research presented at the summit.

Recognition and Closing Day Highlights

On the concluding day, the summit honoured senior contributors to cardiology in the region. Dr. RPS Bhardwaj was conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Dr. Shyam Sunder Singhal received the Senior Most Cardiologist of Kanpur award. Chief Guest Dr. Ashok Seth (Chairman, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi) spoke about how new techniques and treatment approaches play an important role in improving patient outcomes, while Dr. PK Goyal delivered a session on Chronic Total Occlusion (CTO) management, emphasising that complex heart disease does not mean limited treatment options.

Closing the summit, Organising Secretary Dr. Amit Kumar reiterated that the summit's core purpose was to bring specialists together on a single platform to exchange knowledge, clinical experience, and emerging techniques for the benefit of patients across the region.

Why This Summit Matters — For Doctors and the Public

For medical professionals, the summit offered direct access to updated clinical research, interventional techniques, and peer knowledge-sharing from national and international faculty. For the general public, the summit's public health messaging — around sleep, diet, tobacco use, and early detection — offered practical, science-backed guidance for reducing heart disease risk.

With coverage across 20+ regional publications, the 2nd Kanpur Cardiology Summit has established itself as one of the most significant cardiology events in North India, reinforcing Kanpur's growing role as a hub for advanced cardiac care and medical knowledge-sharing.
